Garmisch-Partenkirchen

The towns of Garmisch and Partenkirchen were combined together into one by Hitler in 1936 for the Winter Olympic Games. Today Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a popular (and also one of the cheapest) place for skiing as well as hiking during the summer time. It is also from this town that the Zugspitze (the highest mountain in Germany at a height of 2962 metres) can be accessed, and from the highest point, on a clear day, one can see the countries of Austria, Switzerland and Italy. Unfortunately it was snowing cats and dogs that day that I went, so it was extremely difficult to take photos with all the snow flakes flying at high velocities at my face.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen Bahnhof

Die Zugspitzbahn

The Zugspitzbahn is a special train carrier that operates along the way up to the Zugspitzeplatz (at 2600metres) , from there to go up to the highest point we'd need to transfer into a cable car. A day pass to use the Zugspitzbahn costs 29.95 Euros! Which is actually very expensive. However, if you ski and have the equipment, then it is very cheap already as compared to other places. From Garmisch-Partenkirchen Bahnhof to get to the Zugspitzeplatz with the Zugspitzbahn, it took about 45 minutes. Along the way there are several stops and skiiers can alight at any of these stops to ski.

Basically it was very difficult to take pictures that day. I could only manage these few. I am not sure if I am going to go back there in summer or ever again. The 29.95 Euros is damn ex!
